Tillsonburg’s 2026 Municipal Budget Adopted

Tillsonburg, ON –The 2026 Municipal Budget that was brought before Tillsonburg Town Council on January 7 has been officially adopted as of January 8.

The adoption of the budget means residents can expect an increase of about $22.36 per quarter, or $89.42 for the year, on the Town portion of the property tax bill, for the average Tillsonburg home assessed at $243,000. This reflects a total municipal tax rate increase of 3.64 per cent.

The first two tax installments, due on February 27 and May 29, are the interim property tax bills, and are based on last year’s tax amount.  The last two installments, due on August 31 and October 30, will reflect the 2026 updated taxes for the year.

Residents who pay through the Town’s pre‑authorized payment plan will also see the change later in the year. Monthly withdrawals from January to July are based on last year’s taxes. Payments are adjusted in August to reflect the approved 2026 rate and continue through October. There are no withdrawals in November or December.

For residents who have their taxes paid as part of their mortgage, the mortgage lender may increase their withdrawals to ensure they have enough funds in the property tax account, but they do so from their own calculations, not determined by the Town.

“When it comes to taxes, people mainly want to know what it means for their household and when they’ll see it,” says Mayor Deb Gilvesy. “Council knows any increase matters to residents, and we want people to understand when it will appear on their tax bill.”

More than half of the 2026 increase is due to retroactive policing costs mandated through the courts, a cost the Town does not control. Even with this added pressure, the overall increase for 2026 is lower than last year.

The 2026 Municipal Budget totals $43.5 million and funds the everyday services and infrastructure residents depend on.
